Eight to ten million Atlantic puffins visit Iceland each summer, and the Westman Islands host the planet's largest breeding colony. Between May and early September, an estimated one million puffins nest on the volcanic cliffs and sea stacks that ring Heimaey, the archipelago's only inhabited island.
The birds arrive in late April, carving meter-deep burrows into clifftop turf, and depart by mid-August once their single chick has fledged. This annual migration transforms the islands into one of the North Atlantic's most concentrated seabird spectacles.
Heimaey's harbor sits fifteen kilometers off Iceland's south coast, a forty-minute ferry crossing from Landeyjahöfn. The island itself is a geological manuscript: the 1973 Eldfell eruption buried a third of the town under lava and ash, adding 2.2 square kilometers of new land to the island's eastern flank. The same volcanic activity that shaped the archipelago created the vertical basalt columns and sheltered ledges that puffins require for nesting. Sheer cliffs on the island's southern and western coasts rise sixty to one hundred meters above the surf, honeycombed with burrows. Boat-based observation offers the only practical access to these nesting zones; the cliffs are too unstable and ecologically sensitive for foot traffic.
Wildlife cruises from Heimaey's Básaskersbryggja harbor operate daily during the puffin season, departing between 09:00 and 17:00 when light conditions and bird activity align. Vessels follow the southern coastline past Stórhöfði promontory, where puffin density peaks, then round the western cliffs toward Súlnasker and Geldungur sea stacks. Atlantic puffins share these ledges with razorbills, common guillemots, northern fulmars, and black-legged kittiwakes. Operators maintain a minimum fifteen-meter distance from nesting cliffs to avoid disturbance, though puffins often approach boats independently, rafting on the water in groups of twenty to fifty birds.
The Westman Islands remain one of Europe's few Atlantic puffin strongholds. Populations in Norway, the Faroe Islands, and mainland Iceland have declined by thirty to forty percent since 2000, largely due to shifting sand eel stocks driven by rising sea temperatures. Heimaey's colony has remained stable, supported by predictable forage fish availability in the nutrient-rich waters where the Gulf Stream meets Arctic currents.
